General Guidelines for Start-ups

These guidelines are meant to help the start-up small business do the right things.  The result will be a smooth transition into a small business venture.  Start with a Business Plan and identification of Potential Financing.  Once you have these, the next steps are:

      1.  Determine a location and address.
           Call or visit the local planning and zoning authorities.

      2.  File a fictitious business name, if necessary.  Forms are available from the County Clerk.
           Publish in a legal newspaper.

      3.  Obtain business license(s).

      4.  Obtain seller's permit, if required, from the Board of Equalization.

      5.  Obtain Employer Identification Number from the IRS by filing form SS-4.
